The Vice Chancellor is the Chief Coordinator of all administrative, academic and public relations affairs of the University. He is also the direct link between the University and the Government, the public and the academic institutions within and outside Uganda. The Vice Chancellor is elected by the Council on the recommendation of Senate and, once elected, sits as an ex officio member of the board and of all its standing committees except the Audit Committee.

Professor Barnabas Nawangwe served as a Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) in charge of Finance and Administration at Makerere University, a position he held from September 2013 to August 2017. He has previously acted as Principal, College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) from January 2011 to August 2013. Prior to that, he was the Dean of Faculty of Technology (2003-2010) and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Technology (2000-2002). He was the Head of the Department of Architecture from its inception in 1987 to 2002. He has chaired several University committees, including the University Research, Administrative and Financial Reforms Committee.

As a Vice-Chancellor, he is responsible for the academic, administrative and financial affairs of the University.

The Office

The Vice Chancellor is assisted in the delivery of his duties by two Personal Assistants (PAs). The PAs help the Vice Chancellor meet his objectives and targets by effectively planning his schedule and travels both within and outside the country. The PAs are assisted by an Administrative Assistant and a Secretary.

The Public Relations Office and International Relations Office both fall under the Office of the Vice Chancellor.

The International Relations Office was initiated by the former Vice Chancellor Prof Livingstone Luboobi in June 2004, and set up in 2005 after approval by the Makerere University Council. The office is responsible for coordinating all international related matters, as conducted in the different units.
